Transfer of 13 roads of Postal Highway being constructed with Indian assistance

The construction of 13 sections of the postal highway connecting Terai Madhes to East-West in collaboration with the Government of India has been completed and handed over. During a function at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Transport on Wednesday, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Binaya Mohan Kwatra handed over the completed road sections to Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Basant Kumar Nemwang.

A total of 275 kilometers of the 1,857 kilometers of postal highway has been handed over today. At the same time, the construction of 30 km Birgunj-Thori road connecting the postal highway is nearing completion.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Nemwang said that Indian assistance was important for the development of Nepal’s physical infrastructure.

On the occasion, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Quatra said that India would extend all possible support for the development of Nepal. He said that India was cooperating with the development of physical infrastructure, social development and economic development of the neighboring countries by adopting the first neighborhood policy. He also said that he will always support Nepal as it has cultural ties with Rotibeti.

He also said that the Janakpur-Jayanagar train will be operational next month with technical and manpower assistance from the Government of India. Similarly, the work of preparing DPR for Raxaul-Kathmandu railway is also being done with Indian assistance, said Ambassador Quatra.

Secretary at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Rabindra Nath Shrestha, Deputy Secretary Keshav Kumar Sharma, Director General of Roads Department Arjun Jung Thapa, Project Director of Postal Highways Directorate Rohit Kumar Bisural and Chief of Project Division at the Indian Embassy Prafulla Chandra Sharma were present on the occasion.

During the program, the Government of Nepal has identified ten much-needed roads as per the agreement reached between India and Nepal to upgrade the road infrastructure in the Terai region of Nepal.

These roads, which are on the access roads of the Postal Highway, are also connecting the major cities on the East-West Highway with the Indo-Nepal border.

Located in seven border districts of Provinces No. 1, 2 and 5, these roads will connect the people of more than 284 wards, 149 villages, 18 village municipalities, 18 municipalities, one sub-metropolis and one metropolis.
